7 things to do when stuck in quarantine

Hey everyone! I hope you’ve all had a great week so far!

I’m actually currently stuck in quarantine at the moment. Yup, I tested positive for Covid! Nothing too severe thankfully, just a bit of a cough and a sore throat. However, just to keep everyone safe, I am having to quarantine for a bit.

Funnily enough, this isn’t my first encounter with Covid. I actually tested positive for it back in February of this year. It was a miserable time, so I’m really thankful that this time around, it’s a lot more mild! And yes, before people ask, I am vaccinated. Which is honestly most likely why I have such mild symptoms this time around.

Now, with this being my second quarantine, I’m once again having to find ways keep myself occupied throughout the day. Thankfully, I do have the ability to work remotely, but when I’m not working, I’m trying to occupy my mind and stay entertained.

So, I thought I’d share some of what I’ve been doing to keep myself busy throughout the day. If you just so happen to find yourself in quarantine anytime soon, (which hopefully you don’t!) here’s a little list of ideas for you.

  1. Start a hobby
I feel like this one is the cliche, but honestly, this is the perfect opportunity to do so. You find yourself with a bunch of free time, why not use that time to do something you’ve been wanting to start? For me, I started journaling more.
You may remember in one of my recent posts that I talked about some ideas on journaling. Since my quarantine pretty much started right at the beginning of the month, I decided to create a couple different daily “logs” for myself. I’m doing a Mood Log, which I talked about in the post I mentioned, a Daily Habits Log, and a Favorite Daily Moments Log. I was able to take the time and really create something I’d be excited to contribute to each day.
I’m also planning on getting back into video editing. I used to do it all the time, but haven’t really since I graduated. So, I’m excited to get back into that now that I have some time on my hands.
  2. Talk with friends
This one is so important! Now, obviously I can’t actually go out and see my friends. But, thankfully, I can still text them and call them so I can interact with people. That’s one of the hardest parts of quarantine, actually, is not being able to see people. So it’s really important to make sure you’re still connecting with people in whatever way possible!
  3. Cook meals for yourself
Maybe this is just a me thing, but I don’t usually take the time to actually cook something nice for myself. But, with all this free time, now I have the ability to, and definitely don’t have an excuse otherwise. Plus, it’s super important to take the time and care for yourself, so why not make it fun! Spend the time to cook something that normally would take too long, or cook your favorite meal. There’s nothing stopping you!
  4. Find a new series to watch
It’s inevitable, you’re spending days at home looking for something to do, so you’re going to end up watching Netflix or something at some point. So, make it a point to watch a show you’ve been meaning to watch.
For me, I started watching You on Netflix, since I’ve been seeing so much about it lately. And I’m actually really enjoying it! Once I finish, I’ll probably start watching Avatar: The Last Airbender (any of my friends reading this are probably thrilled lol). I have been recommended that show countless times, and I finally have the ability to take the time to watch it!
  5. Get outside
This one is so important. Even if it’s just going and sitting on your patio or something, taking a quick walk to the mailbox, a walk around the block, or even just going for a bit of a drive around the neighborhood, it’s so important to get out of the house for a bit.
Quarantine for most people means you’re cooped up inside for 10 days straight. It’s very easy to lose your mind a bit staying inside that long. So get outside, even if it’s just for a few minutes.
  6. Do some cleaning
I’m actually really looking forward to cleaning during this quarantine period. Like I’ve said many times in this post, quarantine really does have a way of clearing your scheduling and ensuring you have some free time.
Personally, I’ll be going through and organizing some clothing that I want to get rid of, as well as taking some time to organize certain areas in my living space that I’ve been putting off working on. I know I’ll be super relieved once it’s done!
  7. Relax
Finally, relax! Chances are that, if you’re quarantining, you don’t feel too great. Drink some tea, get some sleep, take care of you.
Also, think about it this way: when do you ever get the opportunity to just spend a week and a half at home, with nowhere to be? Take this time and de-stress, and have a self care week. If you need some tips on self care, I actually wrote a post about it, so go check it out!

And there you have it! Now, hopefully your quarantine won’t be so boring. Sure, it’s a bummer. You can’t go out and see people, plans get cancelled. Heck, I was supposed to go to a wedding this weekend. But instead of sitting here being upset about it, why not take advantage of it?

I hope everyone has a fantastic Labor Day weekend! See y’all next week!

  1. I haven’t experienced quarantine (thank goodness) but since retiring I also have a little more time on my hands. One activity that I’ve always felt drawn to but never had the luxury of time to do was writing notes of encouragement or thanks. Handwritten notes are a thing of the past – I even compose them on the computer to edit and get my words in perfect order. Then I transfer them to a pretty notecard in longhand After teaching cursive for 40 years I have pretty decent handwriting! My hope is that it spreads some good feelings and kindness in a world that is lacking those very things. Thanks Ash for taking the time to so artfully write your thoughts every week.
