Undertale: my favorite video game and why

Hey everyone! Hope you’re all doing well this week.

If you read my last post, you’d know that I tested positive for Covid last Wednesday, which means I’ve been in quarantine for a week and a half. This means I’ve had a lot of free time on my hands. So, I found myself playing a lot of video games to pass the time.

Now, you may have heard me talk about my love of video games in the past. But there is one game that absolutely blew my mind when I played it.

In honor of the fact that it’s celebrating it’s sixth anniversary next week, I feel that it’s time for me to talk about my favorite game of all time: Undertale.

Now, before we get going, I do want to mention one thing. This game needs to be played through before you can truly understand how incredible of a game it really is. It’s not something that I will ever be able to explain to you. So please, if you haven’t played it, please do. I will write a more general overview of the game (some minor spoilers still included), and if you guys would like, in the future I can then write a separate post with more spoiler heavy content. But for today, we’ll talk basics!

I am blown away that this is a game designed by one person—Tobyfox. He is the genius behind Undertale, although he’s incredibly humble about it. He only had a handful of other people helping him out, but he did most everything in the game. This game he created has won over ten awards, and has been nominated for dozens more. I’d say it’s a pretty ground-breaking game.

The storyline seems simple at first. You play as a human who has fallen underground, into a world where the monsters of the world have been banished. You now have to find your way home, and along the way, you meet some of the monsters who live down there.

I feel like too many people look at Undertale as a game and try to judge it without really giving it a chance. And I get it—it looks like just a little pixelated game filled with some silly jokes and a basic plotline. Wrong.

Firstly, Undertale has three different ways you can play: Neutral, pacifist, and genocide. In the neutral route, you make friends with some monsters along the way, and others you end up killing. Typical RPG gameplay, in other words.

In the pacifist playthrough, you save everyone. If you kill even one monster, you’re now on the neutral route. You have to make friends with everyone, and make sure that you do all the little side quests in the game.

And then genocide. It’s simple. You. Kill. Everyone. That’s right, everyone. Not one monster is spared. It’s pretty dark actually, when you think about it.

I highly recommend that you play through the pacifist route on your first time through. It gives you the most story, and is honestly the most empowering. I still cry at the end of it each time I play! However, you can also play neutral as well for your first time through, and that’s how most people play. It’s still a fantastic story!

Genocide should absolutely be played after pacifist. It’s more powerful that way, and is how the game was meant to be played.

One of my favorite aspects of the game is how it balances its witty humor with the more serious aspects of the game. The fourth wall breaks, the puns–the game has all the jokes that will actually have you laughing out loud. But it also knows to slow itself down, and knows how to engage the player in the story. Trust me when I say that this game is super addicting!

I highly recommend this game to anyone looking for something that goes out and tries something new in the video game world. This is not your typical RPG. It has many twists and turns, an incredible story, and music that you’ll just want to listen to all day. Be sure to go play it, or watch a play-through on youtube if you can’t play it yourself. I highly recommend this play-through (if you’re alright with some swearing) if you want someone who’s as passionate about the game as I am.

So there you go! This game is so near and dear to my heart. It was one of the first games that really expanded my mindset of how video games could work.

If you like this kind of content from me, let me know! I know it’s a bit different than what I usually talk about, but I am always happy to talk about my favorite games! I have several more that I’d love to share. Let me know if you’d like to hear about them!

I hope everyone has a great weekend! ❤
