How to start a prayer journal and why it’s beneficial to your faith

As Christians, we should try and stay connected to God and talk to Him often. But it can sometimes be difficult to find meaningful ways to keep up this relationship with Him.

One way I connect with God is through a prayer journal. Many people overcomplicate the idea of what it takes to keep up a prayer journal when, in reality, it can be a very simple and enjoyable part of your day!

Prayer is an essential part of having a relationship with Christ—it’s how we communicate with Him and develop a stronger relationship with Him. A prayer journal is just the next step up!

Prayer can sometimes be a daunting thing for some people. Journaling can eliminate this feeling, as it is a more tangible way of interacting with God.

I see prayer journaling not only as a way to stay connected to God, but also as a way to track growth as someone of faith. I will occasionally go back and read my older entries and reflect on how I’ve grown, or even see how God was working in my life at a specific point in my past.

The important thing to remember when starting a prayer journal is that the experience and layout is different for everyone, because everyone has their own unique way of connecting with God.

When I journal, I typically don’t follow a specific format or theme. I tend to write about what is on my heart and about what I feel the need to pray about.

Then there are others who tend to follow themes or even printouts when writing in their journal. Rachel Wojo, a Christian blogger, talks about a few of these different tactics to keeping a prayer journal in her blog.

So how do you start a prayer journal? My advice would be jump right in and commit to it! Just have fun with it; go out and buy any kind of notebook/journal and just start writing. You will eventually find out what works best for you and your relationship with Christ.

Just start out by praying about what’s on your heart, whether it’s something you’re struggling with, something you’re grateful for, or even just about your day!

How often should you write? Again, that depends on you and your relationship with Him. You can pray daily, every other day, weekly, or even just when something is on your heart that you feel called to write down.

The most important thing to remember is this: this is your journal! God doesn’t care about format or style or anything like that; He only cares that you’re praying to Him and strengthening your faith by talking to Him. Remember, God values your time, not your aesthetic!

How do you write in your journal, and how has your faith grown since starting it?

  1. I love your take on this, keeping it simple, yet valuing its importance. I also write prayers in my journal. It’s a really cool way to look back on what you’ve written and how much God has impacted your life.
