Finding time for Jesus in college

As a college student, I have discovered how hard it can be to set time aside for God. There are classes to go to, homework and readings to do and exams to study for. Plus, we have to try to get a decent amount of sleep while juggling all of those responsibilities. So where does God fit into the picture?

It is essential to our faith that we spend alone time with God. Not spending time with God is similar to trying to keep a relationship with a friend, but never actually talking to them or interacting with them. To keep a strong relationship with Him, we have to put forth an effort and reflect with Him.

I try to spend time reflecting on my faith every day. I’ll share a little bit of advice about how I’ve been able to keep up my daily reflections with God.

  1. Figure out a time of day that works best for you — Everyone is different, and everyone’s schedule is different. Most people tend to spend time with God right after they wake up or right before they go to bed. I’ve discovered that doing my devotional every night before bed works best for me. That way, God is the last thing on my mind as I’m falling asleep. I don’t function well in the mornings, so again, nighttime works best for me. You just have to figure out a time of day that suits you!
  2. Don’t do this because you have to, do it because you want to — Trust me when I say you will get so much more out of your reflections if you actually want to do them. If you dread getting out your Bible and spending time with God, you aren’t going to get anything out of them. Find a system that works for you! Whether it be reading your Bible, studying a devotional book, praying with Him or even just listening to music and reflecting with God, there will always be something out there that will work for you. I’ve discovered that reading a devotional every night works best for me! I get my devotionals through Faithbox every month. They ship me a new book at the beginning of every month, and I have gained so much out of each of them and have definitely grown closer to God!
  3. Be consistent — I’ll be honest, it does take effort to get into a routine like this. But after a little while, it will simply become a habit! Just stick to your routine until it just becomes a natural part of your day.

Let me know how you spend time with God, and what you’ve gained from these experiences with Him!

  1. From one college student to another, you’re so right. There seems to be no time to spare to sleep let alone read my bible. It can be easy to push God to the side when we have required bible classes and chapel, but being able to spend that one-on-one time with our Creator is vitally important. Thanks for the reminder to dive back into my relationship with the Lord.

    1. Time-management is definitely a challenge in college! Finding that time to spend time alone with God is definitely something we need to implement into our lives, even though we may find excuses.

  2. Making the choice to form a positive spiritual habit is so important. There are enough hours in the day if people just make room for what’s important. Excuses can fly left and right, but in the end we’ll wish we had prioritized what matters most. Thanks for sharing your tips, it can be really hard to put aside life’s daily distractions, but there is a way!

    1. Exactly! Even though it may not seem like it, there will always be a time in the day to spend time alone with God, even if that time is just fifteen minutes.

    1. It is something that many people tend to overlook. Spending time with God shouldn’t be a chore on our to-do list. It should be time that we look forward to every day!
