Mission trips: there are more opportunities than you think

Mission trips are a passion of mine. I’ve gone on many, and I always encourage people to go on one if it is in God’s will for them to go. But there are so many different kinds of mission trips out there. There are some that work well for people, and some that don’t. Every person is different, and it’s all about finding the mission trip that’s best for you. I’ve divided these trips into three separate categories. Hopefully one or more will reside with you, and you feel called to go on a trip yourself.

  1. Regional mission trips: These are trips that not many people know exist, or may fail to consider when looking for service opportunities. These trips may just be a few hours from your own home and are usually much cheaper than the ones that require more extensive travel plans. For example, every March my church takes a group of families up to Coalmont, Tennessee, to help serve the community there. We serve through an organization called Mountain T.O.P., and we go out to different homes to do home repairs, yard work, or whatever else they may need. Regional mission trips are very good if money is tight or if the larger mission trips are unappealing to you.
  2. National mission trips: National mission trips are good for when you want to travel a bit farther from your home, but also staying within the country. I have found these to be enriching experiences that really helped to strengthen my faith. This trip is the perfect balance between getting out and putting yourself in and environment where you can really connect with God and staying within an area you’re slightly familiar with. Plus, there are so many people in your own country that need just as much help as the people in developing nations.
  3. International mission trips: These are the ones that most people tend to think of when the topic of mission trips is brought up. These trips are good for getting outside of your comfort zone so that you can feel God’s presence even more. Many amazing memories are made on trips like these, and there are so many people out there who need this type of help. God will use you in ways that you could never imagine, and it’s amazing to see what He can do. It also is a very humbling experience that can help to give you a new perspective. These are a big commitment, but if you decide to go, you won’t regret it.

One verse that comes to mind says, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20

Mission trips are experiences that you will never forget. God will touch you and the people you’re helping in unimaginable ways. If you feel called to go on a mission trip, there are many churches an organizations that you can contact. You can also gather your own team and go out on a mission trip together.

  1. I have been on a few regional and national missions trips, and it is definitely important to keep in mind the needs close to home. Oftentimes, international missions trips get the most publicity, but all are needed and desired. They really are an experience that you never forget!

    1. Very true! International mission trips definitely get the most publicity out of those three. There are so many people around us that need help as well, and it’s important to not leave them out when thinking of service and mission trips.
